Dr. Dean Rice was many things to a variety of people. His legacy lives on through education, conservation, veterinary medicine and everything in between. He truly changed the world for the better, one person and one animal at a time. He has affected the career trajectory of high school students from the early 90's to this very day. He had a way of making people feel like they had value and were worth fighting for. His ability to share knowledge and educate others formally and informally was a gift. He was very straight forward with everyone he dealt with, you knew where he stood and you stood. His career in veterinary medicine started when he graduated from Kansas State. He served on many boards on the local and state level. Through his work in veterinary medicine and conservation - he helped all animals from the tiniest to the largest living on the earth. He had a passion for sharing his knowledge and making us all "think". He valued people who could use their knowledge and ability to think and solve problems. He valued the ability of one to choose the right path for themselves. Helping people choose the right path was something he took pride in. He was very proud to write letters of recommendation for his graduates for vet school.
Dean believed in people who may not have had that from their closest family. This belief in others to do more and be more has carried many people to greatness in veterinary medicine, human health and many places along the way. He was truly an angel sent to be a part of our lives. We all strive to carry on the legacy he started. Now, get your feces consolidated - we have a world to change.
